FOMO
When you say yes when you should really say no
You are on vacation and you get a work call. What do you do?
Many of us step away from whatever we are doing and who we are with and answer the phone. Whether it is your highest revenue generating client or the call from your boss, we can’t seem to put work aside when we are out of the office.
If you yourself haven’t done it (I’m guilty of it!), you know someone who has. Recently I’ve heard several stories of people who answered a call from the boss while on vacation only to be told they were let go. I even know an entrepreneur who was on her yearly cruise with her husband, left the ship, flew home, and then flew back to join the remainder of the cruise.
In the most recent episode of the Making WAVES to Move to Joy podcast, my co-host and I explored the myth that we can’t say no. We focused specifically on the workplace, but the reasons we say ‘yes’ when we know we should say ‘no’ actually apply to our personal lives as well. While fear was the most common reason for saying ‘yes’, we discussed that helping others, people-pleasing, and FOMO (fear of missing out) were common reasons to say “yes” at work and at home.
❓Where is your reluctance to say “no" showing up in your life right now and how is it stealing your joy?
